Team Sabado wins first game in 3 years

"I dreamt about it last night", said team captain JP Pangilinan, who scored most of the points for the team through fast break, free throws and three pointers. "I had good feeling at the start of the game."

Although no one knows whether he was just kidding, the team was very happy with the way they played. Undermanned with only one reserve player, the team kept the same pace throughout the game. The opponent lead during the first quarter but with the collective effort of the "magic six", as Pangilinan calls them, the lead was overcome and the opponent never lead after the first half. The magic six was composed of Miko Sabado, Guiller Salumbides, Fred Geronimo, Stephen Cate, JP Pangilinan, and of course the awesome and recently chickenpoxed Rod Coronel. The game ended with a score of 58-38.

"I didn't expect it", said Rod Coronel. "Gatorade must really work! Now we know how to win..." In a recent blog post, Coronel promised to bring the said sports drink due to a bad experience in their previous game of having nothing to replenish his thirst. Playing coach Miko Sabado emphasized that they should maintain a same strategy and pace for the remaining games if they want to make it to the final four.

The win was the first real win of the team in their third season playing in the ABL (Ateneo Basketball League). Last season, the team was able to obtain a single win, but only through default.

The question now is: will history repeat itself? It can be remembered that the franchise, during their three years in the IAC basketball league was winless in their first two years. Dropping the Choopuppies team name, the team redeemed itself on its third season in the league, winning five out of seven games in the eliminations and reaching the final four. Will they do the same thing this year? We'll know the answer for sure after their next four games, three of which they have to win.

The team was cheered by a loyal fan, Chi Billiones who was the lone supporter of the team throughout the game.

*All quotes were originally in Filipino.

Blog Article by Rod Coronel

Basketball Nicknames

Every good basketball player gets a nickname on the court whether it be on a gym or a playground. I've gotten quite a few while growing up. My very first nickname was the "Plastic Man". I got it in our playground here in our village. It was a good nickname and i won almost every tournament we joined back then and the most memorable moment was when i was awarded MVP of the tournament. I was called "Air JP" because of that MVP plum. In my high school also, i had nice game also and since an unknown player from the Phoenix Sun was on the rise back then, my game resembled his game in my school and therefore they called me Elliot Perry because of that. In college, i was the leading scorer for my IAC team and one of my teammates complemented me with my crossover dribble and he called me "Stephon Marbury". Now, in Ericsson Telecommunications, i became the starting point guard and we won the 2007 Net Tournament. We tried to defend the title this year but unfortunately we lost but because of my game, i became known as "Speedy Gonzales". Those are some of the nicknames i've gotten while playing basketball and my favorite is "Speedy Gonzales".

Respect

We lost our game last Saturday at Xavier Father Cortina Sports Complex. I played my heart out despite of my still nagging ankle injury. Despite the loss, i've earned the respect of our opponent and one of them even congratulated me and said "galing mo pre". For me, that's a great reward even if we were defeated. There is a saying "Respect is earned, never given".

Injured

I got injured on our game last Saturday. Rivers was informed of the incident by the team trainer and resisted comment. "There were too many punch lines, so I left them alone," said Rivers.

This reminds me of my injury this year, my team was 3 - o, and my team and I were playing extremely well. I was playing 35 minutes per game and we had 1 more game remaining and were off to the playoffs. The weekend before our last 1st round game, i had manicure and pedicure, and on the day of our game i felt that my right foot was a little swollen so i taped my foot and ignored the pain. I went to work and on game time when i was about to change, my foot was badly swelling, i can't walk and i was limping going to the court, then i told my coach that i had swollen foot and i was to embarassed to tell my teammates why i can't play that game. My injury was because of the pedicure, the same thing that Corey Maggette had. It's nice to know i'm not the only one who experienced that injury. Luckily i recovered in time for the playoffs, and we won the championship.

My coach exact words the day before the playoffs:

"Walang magpapapedicure this weekend, baka magaya kayo kay JP"

My Game Is Made Outside

I remember playing my 1st basketball when we transferred to BF Homes, Paranaque. I was 7 years old when i first dribbled a basketball, made my first shot and gain new friends at the process. This was at the street near my house, so literally we call it street basketball. Zaragoza Street was our house then (this is my house), we had a nice court, 4pm was usually game time. Even when i was little and young, i had no hesitations to play with the older guys playing there. At first, we were not allowed to play with them because they play serious ball which usually involves money or what we call "pustahan" or "coke". It just means the losing team would treat the winning team with a bottle of coke usually Litro size or 500ml. So in order for us younger guys to play ball, we usually play earlier, under the streaking heat of the sun, usually after lunch time, 1pm my friends and I play basketball until 4pm approaches and the older guys would usually bully us into leaving the court. Our game were usually for fun, we just wear slippers and our "pambahay" and we just played with our hearts out. Some of us were standouts and some of us soon played with the older guys playing "pustahan" with them. Fouls were honesty system, and time outs were usually called when cars had to pass by the street. This is where I first played hoops and my game developed here, I became tough because my teammates and opponents were older, taller and stronger (magulang maglaro), I trained myself to shoot well, dribble well and jump very high. We had tournaments 4on4 tournaments in the street and I won MVP awards and gold medals for being part of the champion team. I will never forget where I came from and where my house is. Phase 6A Zaragoza Street is my house and this is where my game was made. Respect that...

"Living A Dream"

Life doesn't always turn out the way you want it to be. I first played basketball when i was 7 years old. I also made my first shot back then. I played my first official game at 11 years old. I won my first championship at 13 years old. I became MVP at 18 years old. My highest scoring game was 81 points and that was a championship game (Phase 6A Mini Olympics 97 4 on 4 Basketball Midgets Division) which we won. After everything i've been through in basketball, i wasn't able to achieve my dream to someday become a Professional Basketball Player and earn money by doing something i love to do and that is to play basketball with all my heart.

When i was still a kid, i've always dreamed of becoming a famous basketball player and having everything my heart desires. I always knew i was good but i never tried to play for my school. I never saw any opportunity to play, all i did was play streetball with older men which made me tough and made me strive to beat them. At school, i just played for fun until i tried out for the SMAA team, i was able to get in and Coach Raffy liked the way i played, he even recommended me to play for the DLSZ NCRAA team. At that time, my dreams of becoming a Professional Basketball Player were becoming clear. I tried out for the UAAP when I was in 3rd year high school, i did not get in but Coach Elmer knew then that i was good and he knew my name then. On my 4th year, i got in the UAAP team but at the last minute i got cut because there was someone who will sponsor our uniform, shoes and other basketball accessories for the team. Of course it was a good thing, but Coach Elmer needed to make room for the son of our sponsor which was my spot. After that, I never played for my school again. I tried a different path of sports, i joined the Chess Club together with my barkada just for fun, luckily for me i also had potential in that game and i became a varsity. I even won the MVP for that game and 3rd place for Milo Chess. I suddenly changed sports but my heart still belonged with basketball. I also tried playing billiards, betting with much older players with my bestfriend and earning money at the process. I placed 8th in a major billiards tournament in Paranaque and after then i became known in billiards.

I've reached college, and i still have the thought of playing for my school. At DLSU, i won 3rd place in a 3 point shoot out against UAAP players. My team won in a 3 on 3 tournament at school. I wanted to try out for the college team but i never had the guts because i lost my confidence in myself after my incident in my high school UAAP team. Until i transferred to Ateneo, i thought to myself of starting a new, but i already gave up my dream of ever playing for my school again. Until one day, my friend recruited me to represent Ateneo against other schools and be their starting point guard, i had great games then but they were never really my teammates because i didn't know them very well. I started making new friends in my school, and one of my friend recruited me to join their team in Intramurals Athletic Association of Ateneo. I made friends there and i had a team. Then the next year i built my own team known as Choopuppies, they were great teammates eventhough we didn't win until our 3rd season. We had 5 - 2 win loss record and we made it to the playoffs only to lose by 3 points. But that was my defining season in Ateneo, as i made it to the top 3 in the Mythical 5 category after the regular season.

So my life has gone thru alot. I've been to different fields by accident but still my heart belonged to basketball. And now i am still playing the game i love together with my career in Telecommunications. I've been blessed by God eventhough i did not reach my dream, i'm still living my dream by playing Star Point Guard for Ericsson Philippines. Earning money, doing my job and at the same time enjoying the game i love the most. And my team also won the Championship in the 1st ever Net Tournament. Now i am a known basketball player for Ericsson and a respected Point Guard by other companies. I may not have been a professional basketball star but God gave me a great job, wonderful family, intelligence, a basketball career and most importantly He gave me my inspiration 9 years ago and my future...

Our Ways of Leading, A Talk by Philippine Coach Chot Reyes

Yesterday was truly an inspiring day for me, first of all I feel healthy na, wala na kong asthma and second I attended one of the most inspiring talks I've ever attended. The talk started with an opening speech from our Country Manager Rajendra Pangrekar then followed by an introduction of the guest speaker Coach Chot Reyes. I knew Coach Chot from the basketball camp that my youngest brother JO attended, he made me join the free throw game which was featured on the Basketball show back then, unfortunately for me, I didn't wear basketball attire on that day instead I was wearing brown shoes, slacks and polo which was very uncomfortable for me to play in but still I played the game and finished third despite slipping several times when running to get the ball after shooting live on tv. Well, going back to talk, he started with a saying about "showing up", showing up simply means giving yourself 50% chance to succeed. Then he continued by telling stories about his success and failures when he started coaching at a young age of 29. There were also clips from his players about his coaching and leadersjip style, overall I was very impressed with his talk considering he is a coach and all he knows is basketball, but was I wrong, he knew alot about leadership not only in sports but in office settings and in life.

Now, I feel honored and privileged to be able to learn from one of the best coach in the Philippines. With that talk, I feel like I can become a good leader through being a great manager, director, vice president and president in the future for Ericsson and I will become a great basketball coach when I retire from work.

What's Up JP!!!

I'm still sick, have been sick since last week because of dust from transferring to our new building in Ericsson. Hirap pa naman ng inaasthma, ubo ng ubo sa work at ang hirap matulog tapos haluan mo pa ng sipon. Tomorrow may game pa naman kami versus DMPI, lalaro ako no matter what. I was walking at Adidas Sports Camp and saw their gym, so I walked in then coach Bong approached me and showed me around, I like their training program because not only do you become physically fit but also you become a well rounded athlete unlike other gyms which focuses on strength and building body mass. I like my body the way it is just need to develop my abs once again though. I'll give the Adidas gym a try and maybe enroll there to be able to work out regularly. Nagemail din ABL (Ateneo Basketball League) sakin, hopefully I can join together with my Ateneo teammates, kung sinong teammates at team di ko pa alam. Hopefully magchampion naman kami this time. I will get ready for the upcoming ABL season and hopefully be a key factor for my team.

Ledesma Hands Sabado Knights Its Second Loss

After a moral boosting victory for the Sabado Knights Team, they were routed to a 86 - 45 score by Team Ledesma. Cholo Carino led the team with 13 points and JP Pangilinan added 11 of his own who clobbered Tae team on the 4th quarter. With the 3 point play of JP Pangilinan the Sabado Knights team never looked back as the Tae team were completely outplayed in the 4th quarter. Cholo Carino said after the game "yung nagpanalo talaga sa atin yung crucial 3 pointers ni Miko at ni Juni which tied the game at the end of 3rd quarter". Joey Merin said "hanep c JP, siya yung gumawa nung 4th quarter nung kailangan ng points at nashoot niya lahat ng crunch time free throws niya". This was the first game for Sabado Knight's star center Joey Merin who posted decent numbers with 4 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block while the Sabado Knight's X Factor players Miko Sabado posted 8 points, 1 rebound and 1 steal and Juni Antonio posted 3 points and 3 rebounds. Stephen Cate was his usual self for Sabado Knights who contributed at both ends of the floor with staggering defense and rebounds and providing 9 points for the team. It's about a team. It's not about picking the five best players to start. That may not be the case. Or the 12 best players to be on the team. There are only going to be 200 minutes that you have in a basketball game – five guys for 40 minutes. Not everybody at times are going to play in a game. And certain guys are going to have more playing time. So, when you're making up a team you have to consider all of those things. That's what we'll look at when we start our training camp."

Sabado Knights Loses 1st Game

As the final buzzer sounded, the last scene on the court was Sabado Knight's point guard on his knees on the hardcourt while his teammates were shaking hands with the opposing team. It was a very controversial game as the calls didn't go Sabado Knoght's way. There was the controversial technical foul on Cholo Carino for delaying the game, the 5th personal foul call on Cholo Carino which was a vital blow to the team because Cholo has been carrying the scoring load for all the 4 quarters and the most controversial event was the ungranted time-out call by the referees to the Sabado Knight's team which caused confusion on the whole team which resulted in a steal and a bucket for the Bambolas team who barely escaped with a one point victory 55 - 54. The Sabado Knight's team came back from a 6 point deficit to lead by 4 in the last 2 minutes of the game led by point guard JP Pangilinan, Cholo Carino, Markus Hidalgo and Stephen Cate. Cholo Carino fouled out with a controversial call which proved costly for the team. The game tape showed little contact which was a big blow to the team. Bambolas scored 2 points with less than 2 minutes remaining and Arjin Uetani came back with a clutch basket to bring Sabado Knight's up again by 4. Bambolas quickly scored again with less than a minute remaining to cut the lead agian to 2. With the clock winding down, Bambolas fouled JP Pangilinan which made 1 out of 2 free throw to bring Sabado Knight's again to lead by 3. Bambolas made a quick 2 again to cut the lead into 1 then Sabado Knight's called for a time out to set up one last play but the referees didn't grant the time out call which gave Sabado Knight's a second left to inbound the ball which resulted in a steal and a score for the Bambolas which caused the game for the Sabado Knights cagers which gave a valiant effort despite the absence of star center Joey Merin.

1st ABL experience

After my 1st ABL season, I've realized that I still have alot to learn about basketball. My team LS ECE 06 posted a 0 - 4 record, and my season average was 8 points, 4 rebounds, 0.8 assists, and 1.25 steals per game although I know I had more assist than my average. But overall I think my team had a nice season because we all gained experience and we all learned alot from our experienced team captain and playing coach Jed Estanislao. Overall it was a great season for me individually posting respectable numbers night in and out and I developed my talent in coaching team basketball after my conflicts with Jed which really helped me alot not only talent and skill wise in basketball but also in developing my basketball knowledge better. Thanks to Jed and to my team for the wonderful season with you guys. Hopefully I can use the knowledge I acquired for the upcoming MPG Basketball Tournament for I will play a different role by being the coach, team captain and at the same time a ball player for the team.

Wade one of NBA Live's most successful cover players

NBA Live may not carry the same "cover curse" that has seen NFL players struck down by injury the same year they appeared on Madden's box, but so far no player has won the NBA championship the same season their likeness has graced NBA Live's cover. The Miami Heat's Dwyane Wade could soon change that.
Wade's hot shooting sank the Pistons in 6With the Heat's Game 6 victory over the defending Eastern Conference champion Detroit Pistons, Wade becomes just the third player to advance to the NBA Finals in the same season he appeared he on the cover of NBA Live. Already a standout player and two-time All-Star, Wade's selection as the cover player for NBA Live 06 would seem particularly apt should the Heat win the championship. After all, who better to represent the 2005/2006 season than the young star player who took his team all the way?
It seems fitting that Flash's performance in the Eastern Conference Finals seemed to come straight out of a video game. Against one of the toughest defensive teams in the league Wade shot 58-94 (61%) from the field whilst averaging 26.7 ppg, 5.2 rpg and 5.5 apg. Through the first four games of the series he averaged over 30 ppg on a blistering 69% from the field. Battling the flu in Game 6 he turned in 14 points and 10 assists as the Heat advanced to the final round for the first time in franchise history.
Miami's starting lineup boasts two other players who have graced the cover of NBA Live; Shaquille O'Neal (NBA Live 96) and Antoine Walker (NBA Live 99). Former Heat point guard and Crossover King Tim Hardaway also appeared on the cover of NBA Live 98 while Shaq was also the cover player for rival NBA 2K6 this year.
Before Dwyane Wade, the most recent player to lead his team to the NBA Finals the same year as appearing on the NBA Live cover was New Jersey's Jason Kidd in 2003, though the Nets would fall to the Spurs 4-2. Like Kidd, Wade finished in the top ten in MVP voting this year and had a fine all around season receiving All-NBA Second Team honours and representing the East at the All-Star Game. Should Wade and the Heat succeed where Kidd and the Nets did not, he will have completed the best season for a player appearing on the NBA Live cover that same year.
The task won't be easy however. With Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks also advancing to the NBA Finals for the first time in club history the Heat will have to maintain the form that carried them past the Pistons if they want to successfully cap off what has turned out to be an outstanding Playoff run. No doubt both teams are ready and willing to prove their mettle when the NBA Finals tip off June 8th in Dallas.
A look back at the cover players' performance the same year they were on the box
NBA Live
Player
Team
Notes
95
Robert Horry/John Starks
Rockets/Knicks
NBA Live 95's cover featured a photo from the 1994 NBA Finals between the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks with Robert Horry and John Starks in the foreground. Horry and the Rockets would repeat in 1995.
96
Shaquille O'Neal
Magic
Started for the East at the All-Star Game in San Antonio, made the All-NBA Third team and led Orlando to a 60 win season. Swept by the Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals.
97
Mitch Richmond
Kings
Was All-NBA Second Team and voted to the Western All-Stars as a reserve. The Kings however went 34-48 and did not make the Playoffs.
98
Tim Hardaway
Heat
All-Star, All-NBA Second Team. Miami won the Atlantic Division winning 55 games but lost 3-2 to the New York Knicks in the first round.
99
Antoine Walker
Celtics
Shot a career high 36.9% from downtown (65-176). Boston went 19-31 in the lockout shortened 1999 season.
2000
Tim Duncan
Spurs
All-NBA First Team, Co-All-Star MVP with Shaquille O'Neal. Injured late in the season and did not compete in 2000 Playoffs. The defending champion Spurs were beaten 3-1 by Phoenix in the first round.
2001
Kevin Garnett
Timberwolves
All-NBA Second Team, Starter for Western All-Stars. Averaged 22 ppg, 11.4 rpg and 5 apg leading Minnesota to a 47-35 record but fell to the Spurs 3-1 in the first round.
2002
Steve Francis
Rockets
Averaged a career high 21.6 ppg and 7 rpg, starting for the West in the All-Star Game. Played only 57 games however while the Rockets went 28-54 and did not qualify for the Playoffs.
2003
Jason Kidd
Nets
All-NBA Second Team, voted to Eastern All-Stars as a reserve. Led the Nets to second straight NBA Finals appearance but lost to the San Antonio Spurs 4-2.
2004
Vince Carter
Raptors
Selected as a starter for the Eastern All-Stars. Played in 73 games after missing 39 the previous season. Toronto went 33-49 and did not qualify for the Playoffs.
2005
Carmelo Anthony
Nuggets
MVP of the 2005 Rookie/Sophomore Challenge. Denver won 49 games before losing 4-1 to the Spurs in the first round.
06
Dwyane Wade
Heat
Starter for the East All-Stars, All-NBA Second Team, 6th in MVP voting. Helped Heat to first NBA Finals appearance in team history.

The Superheroes of Hoops

The ultimate NBA championship team comprised solely of comic-book characters.

April 20, 2006 - The NBA playoffs are about to get underway. In other words, the real hoops season begins this weekend. In honor of the first round battles soon to take place, we put together our own championship-caliber hoops team. Ladies and gentleman, put your hands together as we announce the starting lineup for your IGN Superheroes!
Sitting Courtside
Wolverine as Jack Nicholson
Nick Fury as Sam Jackson
Hulk as Spike Lee
"I'm ready for my close-up, bub."
"We got snakes on the muthaf@#$in' court!"
"Hulk complain about everything!"
Supernatural Basketball Association
PG - Spider-Man
SG - Hawkeye
C - Giant Man
The man running point has to be able to handle the ball and be capable of pushing the ball quickly up the court. Sure, Spidey may get caught palming from time to time, but no one has better handling skills. He's not the best team player, but he never puts himself above those with an open shot.
A great team has to have balance, which means there has to be one shooter who's killer from behind the arc. Get Hawkeye some spacing and he'll drain treys all night.
In today's NBA, you need a center who's not only tall, but who also has some mobility. You don't get better than a guy who can alter his size. He can clog the lane, block out like nobody's business and dunk without leaving his feet.
PF - Luke Cage
SF - Cpt America
6th Man - Daredevil
If there's one guy you want layin' picks and clearing out the post, it's Luke Cage. The former Power Man makes the perfect Power Forward. He lacks range, but his presence inside should provide opportunity for the true shooters to get open.
Pure athleticism serves Cap well. As the small forward, he's strong enough to post up when he needs to, but is also the best bounce-passer in the history of the NBA. He can dish, shoot the fadeaway and defend on the other end of the court.
The sixth man on any team needs some versatility. While Daredevil may not be great in the post, he can shoot from anywhere on the floor and has an uncanny awareness of this teammates.
Coach - Superman
GM - Professor X
Some might think the Man of Steel should be on the court, but Superman's not much of a hoops player. He is, however, a great mind and the ultimate inspirational coach. He's not the fire and brimstone type, but that doesn't mean he's not effective.
Is someone trying to lowball the general manager on a trade? Who's going first in the draft? All this and more is already known by the one GM who can literally read the minds of his competitors.

MJ and Kobe

Can't Compare Kobe and MJ
The eras in which they played are completely different
Kobe Bryant's 81-point performance the other night against Toronto was certainly incredible, but it is unfair to try and compare what Kobe did to what Michael Jordan did in his playing career or what he could have done for that matter. In the era when Michael played, it was a physical game. Defense was promoted. Guys took pride in it. Today defense is no longer a part of the game. Guys are driving to the basket. There are rules where you can't step in front of them. To me, it is taking away from the game seeing a guy like Tony Parker taking advantage of the rules. He is shooting 55 percent from the field. That says something about the game itself. In the history of the NBA, I'm sure a point guard has never led the league in field goal percentage. It's a different game now. It's really not about being tough and physical because the NBA isn't a physical game anymore. When you talk about how the Knicks and Bulls used to battle in the early '90s, the Oakleys, and Pat Ewings, the Masons, and how they would have the ability to use their hands to put you in a trap position. There is no way you can even triple team a guy now and stop him. Any contact is a foul. I can't compare the two players because I see it as two different games. If I'm guarding Kobe Bryant in today's game, I couldn't be the defender I was known as.The defensive rules, the hand checking, the ability to make contact on a guy in certain areas, the ability to come over in the lane to stop guys from getting to the basket, that's all been taken away from the game. There is no contact up on the floor. The way I played Magic Johnson in the '91 Finals, I would have fouled out the first time down court. To compare how someone would have played Michael Jordan, Chuck Daly would send someone to wear him down. Even though he may get 30 or 40 points, they're going to be a hard 30 points. But in today's game, you can't put that physical wear and tear on a guy. It's a free ball type of game. If you are shooting it well, you can score 80, as you've seen because you are going to get to the foul line. Officials have very quick whistles now because they're promoting scoring. Let's not forget, three years ago, this league was trying to figure out how they could get the scoring back up, how they could drive the fans back into loving the game, and this is what they were building on. They changed the field of rules. Those rules are huge in the game today. They benefit the perimeter guy. Back in the day, you may get one guy to score 40 points in a month. When Michael Jordan scored 40, it was all over the front page of a newspaper. Now you can pretty much have 40 points at halftime. Until the league went and changed the rules and tried to get some of that bully ball out, you couldn't come out and perform like that every night. The game was too physical. You were too sore the next day and you were just tired and physically worn down. The game seems so fun and free now. Guys are making a living just standing out there shooting jumpers. If you want to say that Kobe could get 100, I would say that Michael could get 100. If Kobe could get 81, I think Michael could get 100 in today's game. I think the psychological style that Michael was able to master in the game, puts him far beyond Kobe. But Kobe's youthfulness has put him in a position where it looks like he is overtaking Michael. Kobe has 10 years in this league. That is a lot of experience to have and still be a very youthful player.I would love to see what would have happened the other night if the rules had been the same as in past years. Kobe is as close to being like Mike as anybody, but you can't make the comparisons anymore. Tracy McGrady can probably, from a numbers standpoint, put up the numbers Michael Jordan put up. He has that type of ability. Dirk Nowitzki can put up those kinds of numbers. The game is built for those guys to put those shots up. If they get touched, they get to the foul line. I would say Kobe is the most polished of all of them as far as being able to handle the ball and create his own shot and opportunity. But this is what the game is going to turn into. Guys are going to start to score 40 points regularly. It may become an average. I don't think Kobe will get 100. What he did is what like Wilt did, a once in a lifetime experience. Given the fact that he shot a heck of a percentage it could have been better, but I don't think he still could have gotten to 100. It would almost have to be perfect and the game would have to go to overtime. I think a lot of things would have to come into play for him to get that. With that said, I am sure Phil doesn't want to coach that type of game. It's not his style. I don't expect it to happen again. Phil will probably do everything in his power to make sure it doesn't. I don't think Phil is going to try to promote what Kobe has done more than anything because he has damaged his whole team. You just scored 81 points. Do you need your teammates? Are they going to step up when you need them or are you going to continue to pound them like you've been doing and be selfish just to get some individual accolades? From a leadership perspective I think Kobe has taken a step back. Look at what he has to live up to now. You just scored 81 points. If you scored 81 points, your team should pretty much go out and win at least 75 percent of their games the rest of the year. Is that fair to say? You just compared yourself to Wilt. Can you go out with your team and do that or are you just going to go out and score tons of points every night? Are you going to get back to the point where you are shooting a lot of shots and you're teammates are not shooting and you're losing?Right now, Kobe has willed the Lakers to a 22-19 record. It will be interesting to see what happens the rest of the way.

Posted by Scottie Pippen - Jan 24 2006 4:28PM

Basketball Diary

Where Everything Started

Phase6A's Dynamic Duo

I was 6 years old when I first learned to ball. And I never knew my life would revolve around it until now. I love basketball so much from playing in video games, buying things and playing it in real life, all i want is everything to be connected with basketball. The first time I played basketball, I nevr knew I would love it so much, I just enjoyed playing it the first time and I just thought of it as a past time. I even loved playing basketball video games more than playing the sport itself. But everytime I played it, I was very competitive and I always wanted to win even against the older guys. I played with my older friends in the streets of Phase 6A and I learned to become tough and to accept loses because they were bigger and stronger than me. The urge to win against my older and bigger friends was very high which made me practice even more, playing almost everyday in the court, noon, evening and even midnight. Then came the first Mini Olympics in our village on 1992. It was divided into 2 groups before, the seniors and juniors group. I played in the junior group with my much older friends and I was always a spectator from the bench, cheering my friends and watching them get all the glory. Although I do excel more than the friends of my age whenever we enter the court. In 1994, I was able to play alot and I was a key player of the bench with my team. Early summer of 1995, my friend Ryan and I trained ourselves very hard for the upcoming Mini Olympics which included a new division, the midgets division. We trained very hard that our vertical leap both had significant gain. For the first time, we were both able to dunk on his mini court at the garage of his house. Then came the 1995 Mini Olympics, which started the reign of JP and Tiki in the Phase 6A basketball court. I felt more confident and I was suddenly oozing confidence even against my older and bigger friends. The Mini Olympics of Phase 6A made me the player that I am today. Tiki and I won a total of 6 championships each and winning 5 straight at one point.

My friends and I also played in different villages and our barkada became legends in Alabang Hills, Tahanan Village, Jakarta Village and Mayuga Village. Mayuga Village was where we mostly played since it was closer and easier to go to. Our team defeated almost every team Mayuga Villlage had to offer us and even defeating teams twice our age. In 1995, Mayuga Village included my barkada in their sportsfest. And of course the Phase 6A boys took over the basketball games with Tiki leading his Blue team to the championship and Arnold, Mito and I leading the Yellow team finals. There was also the prestigious summer basketball tournament in Jakarta which included DLSZ UAAP players, Manresa team and other teams with celebrities playing. Our village joined the tournament and assembled the top 15 players in our vilage from age 16 and below. Our team name was Batibot which were composed of Benedictine star player Maco Ortegaas our forward, Marymount center Ron, our point guard Lauren Guevarra, Don Bosco Makati star Johannes Quiban at forward and I played shooting guard for our team. I earned the starting five slot with MVP like performance in our Mini Olympics and Mayuga Sportsfest. Even our bench was very solid then with Blue team star player and Mini Olympics leading scorer Tiki Ilagan, high flyer Ryan de Guzman, white team star point guard RJ Pangilinan, solid defender Jason de Jesus, Red team second leading scorer CP Romualdez and his brother Mito Romualdez. Blue team seniors star player Mike Tan coached the team and we reached the finals with staggering defense and the brilliant play of Maco Ortega. I was the second leading scorer for our team behind Maco Ortega. Our team reached the finals but unfortunately we lost to the DLSZ UAAP team with our star player Maco Ortega missing our finals game due to personal reasons. But our team gave a valiant fight and became well known in the whole BF community.

On my second year high school in De La Salle Zobel, I played basketball alot with my barkada and I became well known in our school. I was one of the point guards who could tap board the official size basketball court and still make the shot. I became a varsity with DLSZ SMAA basketball team when I was in second year which was coached by Coach Raffy. I also made it in the NCRAA basketball team when I was in 3rd year which was coached by Coach Satorre who also became my Chess coach and I was one step closer to becoming a UAAP player which was every basketball player's dream in our school. I made it in the DLSZ UAAP training pool before my 3rd year ended after getting cut 2 times before. I made the team after making a spectacular lay up against DLSZ's UAAP star player and leading scorer Gian Nazario. I really felt like I was in heaven after making the shot and I really felt the air when I jumped in front of him and it was really one of the defining moments of my basketball career. My shot became well known around our school and it impressed Coach Elmer Reyes. But after all the hard work, all the cuts I took, all the trainings, scrimmages, and drills I've gone through on the training team it all ended when Coach Elmer Reyes fielded Wacky Trillo's son ahead of me. My basketball life ended their in Zobel. The passion and heart which inspired to play the game were all gone. I just played well in the 2nd year, 3rd year and 4th year basketball intrams but my dreams just all went down the drain. Dreaming of seeing myself playing in Television and making a Jollibee 3 pointer and becoming a Milo Best player of the game were all like dust in the wind.

Goin into college in DLSU, I was very excited, the thought of starting a new life and maybe finding a new passion. Meeting new friends in DLSU was fun and getting acquainted with my old friends was a very pleasant site for me. My blockmates also made a team which included me. We joined the ENGter block which I only played once since the games were at 7 pm and my love for the game was not that strong anymore. I spent most of my time with my girlfriend Koky back then and I never felt like I missed the game at all. With my short stint with my blockmates, they still compared my style of play with Dindo Pumaren who was known as the bullet with his quickness and speed on the court. I joined the 3 point shootout La Salle open. Everybody was invited to join and a total of 100 students joined including DLSU UAAP players. As I vested all the other players including the UAAP players to enter the finals, I was pretty satisfied with my performance and I lost in the finals very convinvingly. I really thought the game was not important to me anymore. On my last PE class in DLSU, I took basketball as my PE. I was loved by the teacher and even making a model for the proper lay ups and how to do the drills properly. Alexei and I was the favorite of our teacher so she teamed us up and made a team for the 3 on 3 basketball tournament. alexei and I conquered the competition as we never lost a game and even winning convincingly in the finals. Alexei and I were both all stars as we both carried the scoring load for our team and we got an A in our PE class.

5th Year AECES Sportsfest team

AECES ASG team

Choopuppies

Choopuppies Reloaded

Transferring to ADMU was rough at first, having no friends at first and no barkada to play basketball with. I became close to Mr. Albert Causo and I asked why is there no baskteball try outs posted for inter college tournaments here in ADMU? He said there is an IAC sportsfest which I can join if I have a team, so I thought that basketball is really over. Then, God gave me a blessing as I was recruited by the Ateneo YFC to play point guard for their team against other schools. One of my friend was part of that organization and he knew the skills I have se he recommended me to his friends for the team. We represented Ateneo against La Salle, FEU, PUP and other schools but our team posted a losing record. I thought of taking up basketball as my PE in order for me to be able to ball. I had a successful basketball PE and I became known as a good player even with my PE coach. One of the highlights of my PE was when Mox Badua jumped in front of me to block my lay up, then I turned my back in mid air and double clutched my shot and luckily it went in. After the game, Mox and his friends talked to me and told me that they would get me as their teammate for the PE Basketball tournament. But surprisingly, Mick was the one who got me as a teammate. Our team had a 3rd place finish with Mox Badua's team winning it all. Then Coach Asajar divided our class into 2 groups to play for the PE interclass tournament. Although we lost the iner class, I led our team in scoring then and my name became a bit known in ADMU cov courts. I became close friends with Miko Sabado from my PE class and my course mate. Charles Ramota brought me with him to play basketball with his IAC teammates and I had a great game, they recruited me to play for their Disney team as a replacement for Son. Unfortunately I was only able to play 1 game which was against the powerful Lil Buchos. Miko and i decided to build our own IAC team which was named Choopuppies by Bojay Santos. Edok also built an ASG team AECES 2 which I also became a part of. I tried leading our Choopuppies team to every game only to be denied game after game. Our AECES team won game after game but fell short in the playoffs against PMSA. The next year our Choopuppies team recruited Rod Coronel and together we led the team but only to come up short every game but finally getting the first win in the IAC championships. My other team which were both AECES both came short of winning the championship. The other one losing in the playoff to PMSA once again and the other losing in the finals against Misa Ballers. The ned of that year was highlighted by the AECES sportsfest. My 5th year team once again came up short and was eliminated by the eventual champions 4th year team. My final year in Ateneo, I had 3 teams, Alas OSA 2 which never made it to the playoffs but fought valiantly in every battle, Alas ASG which fell short of the championship once again this time with team Box and the best team I ever had, the New York Noks, a cinderally team which had nothing to lose but everything to gain. Win after win with this team was all very memorable for me, this team gave back the passion and love I had for the game but I lost it once again after letting my team down against Team MAC in the playoff. Although there were a lot of bad calls made by the ref, I still had to blame myself and ask all the questions in my head, what if... my dreams ended on that day, Dec 6, 2005, 9pm ADMU cov Court 6, we lost by 3 points with a sub par performance form me with 8 points. I love the game so dearly and I had the best team I ever hoped for but I've let them down.

From Choopuppies to NY Noks

My love and passion for the game never really disappeared. It was always with me all along. Having alot of championships, MVP's and wins was were my passion and love appeared but losing games of basketball and life made it disappear. Winning is a very rewarding feeling and losing should always be a lesson learned. As we lost the game last Dec 6 to team MAC, I onced again felt how I felt when I got cut and when I lost all my dreams. Hopefully in the upcoming days of my life, the wonderful feelings I felt with basketball would once again come back and bring out the competitive nature of JP Pangilinan who always picks himself up even after every downfall in life, be it in basketball or real life situations. There would still be another chance, and surely God will give me that. If God doesn't give us what we want, He has something better in stored for us.

Best Basketball Team

The Road to Championship (part 7)

With the final game of the season, NY Noks faces Team Bangan, with nothing on the line for both teams, team Bangan decided to default the game which gives the NY Noks the easy victory. Relying on their fastbreak game and their outside shooting the CTC based Noks zoomed to a 12-4 lead. The Bearwolves was able to slowly crawl back into the game during the second quarter outscoring the Noks, 10-2, to tie the ball game at 14 a piece at the end of the half.It was only in the third quarter that the Noks were able to regain their scoring touch, however the Bearwolves proved to be a determined opponent. Switching to a 3-2 defense instead of their usual 2-3 formation, the Bearwolves forced the Noks to commit a lot of turnovers and convert these mistakes into points. The Bearwolves could have done more damage if not for the shot-blocking skills of Noks star forward and MVP candidate Rod Coronel. The third quarter ended with a 22-18 score in favor of Bearwolves. With star shooting guard JP Pangilinan being shackled by the relentless defense of Bearwolves, the Noks coaching staff decided to field Roy Rollan at the start of the fourth period. As the time was winding down and the Bearwolves leading the game at score of 24-20, the coaching staff agreed on letting Roy take the crucial shots, scoring 4 of the team's next 5 points. With less than a minute to go in the game and the Bearwolves still leading by a point at 26-25, Miko Sabado decided to run a play for Rod Coronel. After receiving the ball inside the shaded lane, Rod was able to find Roy alone in the corner for a 20-footer that proved to be the game winner. The Bearwolves had a chance for a final shot but the ball was stolen by Jopoy Pandarawan. With the win, the Noks are now secured of being the third seed for the upcoming IAC playoffs. The win was made even more dramatic by the fact that this is the first trip by the NY Noks to the playoffs, who dropped the Choopuppies franchise name after being eliminated the past two seasons with a 0-7 win-loss card.

The Road to Championship (part 5)

1 more win was what the Nokkers needed to get a playoff berth but it would have to come at the expense of the El Grande team. The 1st quarter started out pretty strong for the NY Noks with the starting 5 doing everything from scoring outside, inside and rebounding all over the court and with JP Pangilinan and Miko Sabado leading the attack and pressuring El Grande's ball handlers, the CTC boys got onto a head start with an 8 point lead. The second quarter was a different story with the El Grande boys lead by star center Paolo Salonga pounding the ball inside and catching up to the Nokkers and taking the lead by 3 going into halftime. The 3rd quarter was an even battle all through out but in the final minutes of the quarter, the El Grande team added 3 points to their lead, leading by 6 going into the final quarter. The coaching staff of NY Noks decided to pressure the ball handlers of the El Grande 5 which proved to be successful in the 1st quarter. The Noks team used man to man full court press and cut the lead to 3 with a minute remaining in the game. The Noks team orchestrated a wide open 3 point shot play for JP Pangilinan but the El Grande team was quick to react, double teaming JP Pangilinan in the right corner. JP Pangilinan saw Rod Coronel free on top of the key and passed it to him to take a desperation 3 point shot which hit nothing but net. With the score tied, the NY Noks decided to drop the press and use honest defense in the dying seconds of the game, but Guiller Salumbides pressured El Grande's leading scorer Miguel Bernundo and accidentally fouled him which made the final 2 free throws to ice the game for his team. It was a heart breaking loss for the Noks team which needed to win 1 of the last 2 games to enter the playoffs. JP Pangilinan led all scorers with 18 points.

The Road to Championship (part 4)

With the on going Ateneo - La Salle game, the Ateneo covered courts was dead silent and with the default of most of the IAC games, the attention was on one game on the court, the game was NY Noks versus Moro Boys. Coming fresh from a come from behind win over team Pasas, the Moro 5 exploded in the 1st quarter getting a 6 - 0 run in the opening minutes of the game and ending the 1st quarter with a 10 point lead. The Noks team made a run in the second and 3rd quarter cutting the lead into 3 points going into the final quarter. The NY Noks took the lead in the final quarter with the defensive pressures of Roy Rollan and Miko Sabado and with steal after steal with the full court press of the Noks, team Moro never recovered and faltered in the end with a 41 - 38 score. Miko Sabado iced the game with his free throw and JP Pangilinan hit back to back triples to take the lead for good. MVP candidate Lester Magno led all scorers with 17 points while JP Pangilinan led his team with 15 points. JP Pangilinan led all scorers with 13 points, 3 rebounts, 1 assist and 6 steals while his counterpart Rod Coronel stacked up the stat sheet with 12 points, 11 rebounds, 7 steals and 2 blocks and Raffy Taruc led his team with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals. JP Pangilinan started the game with his hot shooting both from the 3 point arc and inside the paint and Rod Coronel did his job with picking up the trash and converting it into points. Team MAC had a big margin in the 2nd quarter with back to back 3 pointers from Raffy Taruc but NY Noks came back with their staggering defense and their tight full court press converting steals and turnovers into points to catch up in the final quarter and taking the lead and never looking back. The full court press was led by defensive specialist Roy Rollan (V BS ECE) who iced the game with his free throw in the final 10 seconds and contributing 3 steals and 5 rebounds for the Nokkers. Roy Rollan said "maganda ang defense natin kaya tayo nanalo, sa next game ganitong strategy ulit". This was a come from behind win for the NY Noks which trailed Team MAC the whole game but overtaking Team MAc and the deciding quarter. With the win, NY Noks moves to 3rd place in the division standing with a 2 - 1 slate tied with Team El Grande while Team MAC drops to 4th with a 2 - 2 record.

A Walk Down Memory Lane...

As the 1st semestral of the school year 2005 - 2006 came to a close, it suddenly hit me that now I have to face the realities of life. It had been a struggle to finish college but it was one of the most memorable years of my life. Coming from DLSU and ADMU communities in college gave me the best times of my life and gave me the most challenges and turning points a student would face. Entering DLSU was very exciting for me... going into my dream school and having the hardest course was certainly a big plus. I had friends that I wouldn't forget and my high school barkada was nearby in other courses in DLSU and some in CSB, it would certainly be a blast and who would forget my wonderful blockmates who accepted me and helped me whenever I needed them and the sweetest inspiration entering college was my girlfriend koky. Memories in DLSU were a plenty like being a absent everytime but still getting the highest score for Trigsol and the ENGTER Block which had me compared to Dindo Pumaren of the Purefoods TJ Hotdogs. One of the best part was winning 3rd place against 60 DLSU students including UAAP players in the 3 point shoot out. Memories of conquering the billiards table against friends and unknown opponents and the precision billiard's skill of Alexei and yours truly. There was also the 3 on 3 PE basketball tournament which Alexei and I dominated. Being the model of every move in basketball for PE and getting an A in basketball and loving it. But when I got german measles, I failed almost all my subjects which pitted me to transfer in ADMU. Who would know that my second life in college would equally match and surpass the memories held in DLSU.

ADMU was pretty much similar with DLSU but with a twist, students in ADMU were more of grade concious persons and I thought this would be a lonely school for me. Making friends in ADMU on my 1st year was a bit hard for I was quiet and an introvert. I stayed in the library most of the time and slept there and sometimes studied. Then I met my ECE friends batch 2000 and 2001 and thats when things changed. Joining the IAC with the Choopuppies and AECES2 was a blast and making an AECES inter batch tournament was a great one thanks to Martin. Being recruited by the YFC basketball team against other schools was memorable being the star point guard. Winning best in boad 2 in inter batch chess in 2004. Making another IAC team with Choopuppies Reloaded and AECES. Joining the IECEP basketball tournament to represent Ateneo and defeating the defending champs TIP QC. Getting win after win with the new and improved Choopuppies with the NY Noks and joining the 3 on 3 tournament with Miko, Rod and Nok. Getting an A in PE basketball once again. And the best memories with friends in the ECE community. For in every hardships, troubles, almost getting kicked out they were always there and being supportive with me. And the dynamic duo of Miko and I both in basketball and in chess.

This day has been a day of reminiscing. As I went home with my best friend Tiki, we passed by the Mayuga village and went to the basketball court were everything started. This was the first whole court basketball we played in and we were that damn good. My first top board and were I gained confidence as a basketball player. There were bad games and a whole lot of good games which gave me respect both in basketball and in personality. My day ended by shooting in the court were it all started and playing 21 with my best friend Tiki. Its just so hard to believe that school has ended and childhood has passed by. Now I'm going to enter a new chapter in my life. Thank you for the wonderful childhood and college memories!!!

The Road to Championship (part 2)

With the big win of the New York Noks, the team is now on a roll, winning 2 of their last 3 games dating back from last season. The next opponent for the NY Noks is the championship favorite Team Nutballs. Without the team Nutballs leading scorer Ralph Tagalog, the NY Noks took advantage of the 1st quarter with a 3 pointer from Jopoy Pandaraoan (V BS CS) and a quick up and under move from JP Pangilinan (V BS ECE). The Dormer's 5 came back and took the lead with Karl Pulma (III BS ECE) leading the way and pitting Rod Coronel (V BS ECE) in foul trouble. With the physical play of team Nutballs, the Dormer's took advantage of every rebound from the inside the paint to have a commanding 12 point lead to end the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter the NY Noks made a 7 - 0 run with 3 minutes remaining with a 3 pointer from Raffy Zuniga (V BS ECE), and quick lay ins from Rod Coronel and JP Pangilinan to cut the lead into 5. But Karl Pulma took over and posted up with power and Aldwill Go sinking the important free throws the Dormers took the game away from the NY Noks. Aldwill Go lead all scorers for the Nutballs while Rod Coronel lead the Noks with 9 points while JP Pangilinan and Miko Sabado chipped in 7 and 4 points for the losing cause.

The Road to Championship (part 1)

This was the last season of the New York Noks formerly known as Choopuppies together as a team in the IAC. With new recruits Roy Rollan (V BS ECE), Pitt Santiago (V BS ECE) and Jopoy Pandaraoan (V BS CS), the New York Noks is expecting nothing less than a championship in the Seniors C division. With favorites Team Nutballs and Bearwolves in the same division, the New York Noks were in for a tough battle through out the 2005 - 2006 season.

The first game of New York Noks were up against Team Pasas being led by Stephen Cate (IV BS ECE). In the first quarter, the Noks started out strong with a 3 pointer from Jopoy Pandaraoan and quick scoring of JP Pangilinan (V BS ECE) and Rod Coronel (V BS ECE). Stephen Cate of team Pasas kept the game close ending the first quarter with the Noks leading by 5. The second quarter was a lop sided quarter with JP Pangilinan doing the damage with back to back triples to keep team Pasas at bay with an 8 point lead to end the half. The third quarter proved to be different one for the New York Noks as the Pasas bench came back with 3 triples to end the quarter and cut the lead into two going into the final quarter. The final quarter proved to be closed until the end, with Stephen Cate continuing his scoring and rebounding evry ball that came his way but Rod Coronel came up with key rebounds and JP Pangilinan drove to the basket with the score tied and scored plus one to give the Noks a 3 point lead. Rod Coronel made a stunning defensive play with 30 seconds to go and Miko Sabdao held on to the ball and sank the crucial 2 free throws to win the game for NY Noks. JP Pangilinan led all scorers with 16 points 4 rebounds 4 steals and 1 assist, Rod Coronel added 8 points 10 rebounds and 2 steals, Jopoy Pandaraoan paced the team with 5 points and 3 rebounds and Miko Sabado was his usual self with 2 points 5 rebounds 3 assists 2 steals and 1 block while Stephen Cate did everything for his team with 11 points 2 rebounds and 1 block. JP Pangilinan received the Molten GF7 ball as a gift from his fiance Ms. Ammy Uetani and he quickly got used to it. He said "parang ang sarap magbasketball dahil sa bola, mas gumanda ang shooting ko at ang overall performance ko sa game". Miko Sabado also liked the ball and he said "maganda yung bola, kahit mabasa kamay mo, makapit pa din sa laro". The new name of the newly improved team would be New York Noks. With the New York Knicks being well known for their defense in the 1990's, the New York Noks team added several players to improve the defensive arsenal of the NY Noks team. The team added defensive specialist Roy Rollan from the defending champion Weltchmertz, Pitt Santiago from the full court pressing team Justice League and shot blocker Jopoy Pandaraoan from the Team Atomica to complete the triple tower inside the paint. The New York Noks team have a projected starting line up of all around player Miko Sabado point guard, Choopuppies ace player JP Pangilinan shooting guard, 2004 recruit of the year Rod Coronel small forward, Jopoy Pandaraoan whose game is being compared to Hanamichi Sakuragi of Shohoku at power forward and tower in the middle Raffy Zuniga center. With the addition of Roy Rollan and Pitt Santiago, the NY Noks would now have a deeper bench and better defensive team both the first and second team. With the new additions, the management looks forward to a successful season for the upcoming 2005 - 2006 IAC season. JP Pangilinan said "ngayong mas malakas na kami, we are not just aiming to win games but we are aiming to win the championship, last season na namin toh, and we're planning to leave a legacy of the "Noks" name in the IAC tournament". The name New York Noks came from the 3 on 3 team of JP Pangilinan, Miko Sabado, Rod Coronel and Nok Gammuac which dedicated the name "Nok Nok Mo" to their player Nok Gammuac which has been a great inspiration to the team.

Phase 6A Dynasty in the making (part 6)

With the 6th season of Bad Bulls, the team is gunning for its 6 straight championship. With the Black team's line up intact, they are once again the favorites to win the 2000 Phase 6A Mini Olympics. The season did not go very well for the Black team, as they needed to win their final season game against the White team led by Kim to have identical records with the White team in order to have another knockout match for the finals slot against the White team. The Blue team entered the finals once again with their 4 superstars namely Ryan de Guzman, Rj Pangilinan, Ron and CP Romualdez. The Black team once again had a dilemma, as their leading scorer for the season, Tiki Ilagan will not be able to play due to personal reasons. So the Black team was once again in the hands of JP Pangilinan. The game started ferociously with JP Pangilinan and Kim exchanging basket per basket as the half ended in a deadlock. The second half started with the White team going strong and getting an 8 point lead with 5 minutes to go in the game. JP Pangilinan took over from there, driving in the lane each time to draw Kim's 4th foul. With Kim in foul trouble, JP Pangilinan kept pounding inside to win the game for the Black team to arrange another showdown with the White team for a spot in the finals. JP Pangilinan said "buti na lang nanalo kami kasi kala ko di namin kaya without Tiki nuti na lans nakalusot kami, sa next game nandyan na si Tiki kaya masconfident kami". The knockout match started with Kim once again doing the damage for the White team as he scored at will everytime. With Tiki Ilagan and JP Pangilinan working together, they kept the game close going into halftime. The final half started with the Black team getting a 10 point lead thanks to the JP - Tiki connection. But Kim, with last years finals playoff fresh in his mind, kept driving inside the paint to get the momentum and the lead with a minute remaining. Kim made a defensive stop against Tiki Ilagan in the dying second to win the game by a difference of 2 points to enter their first finals appearance. The Blue team eventually won the finals and received their first championship in 5 straight finals appearance. It proved to be a sweet finals victory for the Blue team as it was Ryan de Guzman's final game for the Phase 6A village. The Bad Bull's legacy ended in 2002 with 6 championships and 3 third place finishes. The Bad Bulls will always be remebered as the team who dominated Phase 6A basketball and made Phase 6A history with the largest winning margin in a single game, the highest individual score a player ever made in a single game and the most championships in the history of Phase 6A.

Phase 6A Dynasty in the making (part 5)

Going into the 5th season of Bad Bulls, the team is gunning for its 5th straight championship. Retaining its 3 main players namely MVP JP Pangilinan, top scorer Tiki Ilagan and shot blocker Juni Antonio, the Black team once again breeze through the regular season games and entered the finals once again with a 7 - 2 record. The Blue team led once again by Ryan de Guzman, RJ Pangilinan, CP Romualdez and newly recruit Ron struggled to enter the finals needing to win a playoff match against the White team led by a new player Kim which had identical records of 6 - 3. Luckily for the Blue team, they were able to escape and win against the White team with the defense of Ron in the middle. Kim scored 40 points in a valiant effort against the White team. The finals was once again Black team versus Blue team in a 4th straight finals match. The Black team had a hard time scoring inside the paint as Ron defended his area tightly and didn't allow shots to come from inside. The Black team tried to keep the game close with 3 pointers and mid range jumpers from all over the floor but the Blue team kept a 12 point margin going into half time. The second half proved to be a different story as Tiki Ilagan led the team into a comeback scoring 10 straight points to cut the lead into 2. JP Pangilinan drove inside the lane and was able to get a foul from Ron which pitted him into foul trouble. With Ron in foul trouble, JP Pangilinan and Tiki Ilagan took advantage of the paint as they drove to the basket on every possession to keep the Blue team at bay with a 6 point lead. On the last 2 minutes of the game, Ryan de Guzman scored 8 straight unanswered points to give them a two point lead with 5 seconds left on the clock. The Blue team had a pre mature celebration expecting the Black team to call a time out but Juni Antonio took the ball out and gave the ball to Tiki Ilagan as he drove down the lane to sink the game winning shot with no time remaining in the clock. The Black team won its 5th straight championship which proved to be a big heartbreaker to the Ryan de Guzman led squad. Ryan de Guzman said after the game "kala ko wala ng oras o kay ay tatawag sila ng time out after my shot, kaya nagcelebrate kami ng teammates ko pero may oras pa pala at di pa sila nagtime out". Tiki Ilagan said "nakita kong nagkakagulo sila dun at alam kong may oras pa kaya pinalabas ko yung bola kay Juni at ni lay up ko at the last second". JP said "it might be the most controversial championship we won, but we'll take it, mistake nila yun kaya we took advantage". The refs finalize the game and awarded the match to the Black team depite Blue team's protest.

Phase 6A Dynasty in the making (part 4)

On the 4th season of Bad Bulls, the Black team still had their line up intact but they got into a slow start, losing 3 of their first 4 games of the season. On the remaining 5 games of the season, the Black team zoomed in and won their remaining 5 games to put them in the finals once again against the Blue team being led by Ryan de Guzman, RJ Pangilinan and newly recruit CP Romualdez. The finals became a personal battle between JP Pangilinan and CP Romualdez as JP Pangilinan kept on pounding inside the paint against CP Romualdez as he scored 32 points in the finals while holding CP Romualdez to measly 5 points on the defensive side. The game came down to the last shot as Ryan de Guzman tied the game with 8 ticks left. The ball went into the hands of JP Pangilinan for the last shot for the Black team as he made a spin move to get away from his defender and he had a wide open look to the basket but he missed the open lay up. JP Pangilinan said "iniisip ko kase nung pag-ikot kung iboboard ring ko yung lay up ko o ififinger roll ko kaya yun namintis ko tuloy". The game went into overtime with Tiki Ilagan taking over and sealing the game with his clutch free throws. Tiki Ilagan contributed 22 points for the Black team as they've won 4 straight championships and beating the Blue team 3 straight times in the finals. JP Pangilinan said after the game "I tried to keep my cool against CP pero personal na kasi yung laban kaya di ko siya pinascore at umiscore ako ng umiscore sa harapan niya". Ryan de Guzman gave a valiant effort for his Blue team with 42 points which has been denied 3 times in the finals.

Phase 6A Dynasty in the making (part 3)

The 3rd season of Bad Bulls was a bit harder, the Black team composed of JP Pangilinan, Tiki Ilagan and Juni Antonio finished the season with a win - loss record of 6 - 3 which were identical to the season record of Red Team led by Johannes Quiban, Jason de Jesus and CP Romualdez. The Blue team led by Ryan de Guzman and RJ Panglinan finished the season with 7 - 2 win - loss record putting them in the championship. A knock out match was scheduled between the Black and Red team. The Red team started the match by being aggressive on offense being led by Johannes Quiban's series of attack under the basket which pitted Juni Antonio into foul trouble which gave them a 10 point lead ending the first half. In the second half, JP Pangilinan and Tiki Ilagan's 1 - 2 punch combined for 30 points with JP Pangilinan's jumpers all over the floor and Tiki Ilagan's 3 pointers, the Black team came back and took the lead for good. Johannes Quiban led all scorers with 40 points for the Red team while JP Pangilinan and Tiki Ilagan both scored 32 points for the Black team which arranged another showdown between the Blue team and Black team in the finals. Ryan de Guzman and RJ Pangilinan sizzled in the first half of the finals to give their team an 8 point advantage going into halftime. In the second half, JP Pangilinan and Tiki Ilagan came back and quickly gained advantage of the ball game. Ryan de Guzman tried to carry his team by keeping the game close with his high flying maneuvers inside the paint. But with the game on the line, Tiki Ilagan sank a 3 pointer on the right side to give the Black team a 3 point lead with 30 seconds left in the game. Ryan de Guzman once again attacked the basket with a quick 2 point to cut the lead into 1. But Tiki Ilagan held on to the ball in the dying seconds and knocked down 2 clutch free throws to win the championship for the Black team. JP Pangilinan said "this is our 3rd championship and is certainly the sweetest one, from almost being knocked out of the championship match but still coming back and winning everything". JP Pangilinan took home MVP honors on one of the closest MVP race in Ph6A history between JP Pangilinan, Tiki Ilagan and Ryan de Guzman. Tiki Ilagan said after the awarding ceremony "alam kong deserving si JP maging MVP dahil consistent yung mga laro niya nung season elimination at nadala niya yung team nung mga panahon na di ako nakapaglaro, kaya i'm happy for my best friend". This was the first 3 peat in the history of Ph6A.

Phase 6A Dynasty in the making (part 2)

The next season, JP Pangilinan and Tiki Ilagan transferred to the Black team to join Juni Antonio as their tower in the middle. The Black team finished the 1996 season with a 7 - 2 record and once again Tiki Ilagan led everybody in scoring with a 32 point scoring average for the season. The finals was set with a showdown between the Black team and Blue team led by Ryan de Guzman and RJ Pangilinan. An unfortunate event plagued the Black team 2 days before the finals as their star player and leading scorer Tiki Ilagan went on a vacation with his family to the US which left JP Pangilinan to carry the team in his shoulders. The finals started with the Blue team shooting the lights out of the Black team with a 21 point lead ending the 1st half. But the 2nd half was a totally different story with JP Pangilinan shooting 7 straight 3 pointers and with Juni Antonio blocking every shot that came into the lane, the Black team was able to catch up and take the lead with Black team role player Solomon hitting a desperation 3 with the shot clock winding down. Blue team was able to tie the game with Blue team role player Chad denying JP Pangilinan the ball and with RJ Pangilinan and Ryan de Guzman doing the offensive damage. The game came down to the last shot with JP Pangilinan driving in the lane in the last 3 seconds of the game with a foul counted shot over Chad. JP Pangilinan was hitted in the face which reacted violently after falling down. JP Pangilinan kept his composure and knocked down the extra charity to finish the game. JP Pangilinan had a captivating performance with 81 points which was highlighted by his 7 straight 3 pointers in the second half which capped the most spectacular comeback in Phase 6A history and the highest individual scoring performance in Phase 6A surpassing the 79 points set by Mark dela Cruz from the previous season.

Phase 6A Dynasty in the making (part 1)

Mini Olympics has always been the highlight of the summer vacation of every kid in the Phase 6A village. This is the time were in the village holds a 4 on 4 Basketball League for kids in the age of 10 - 21 years old for the Midgets/Juniors Division and ages 20 above in the Seniors Division. The Mini Olympics Basketball league started in 1992 and ended in 2002.
The Juniors Division was dominated by a dynasty known as the Bad Bulls. The name Bad Bulls was given to the dynamic duo of JP Pangilinan and Tiki Ilagan. The name Bad Bulls came from the movie Bad Boys which starred Will Smith and Martin Lawrence and from the NBA team Chicago Bulls which were highlighted by Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. The Dynasty of Bad Bulls began its winning ways with the Blue team in 1995 which starred Tiki Ilagan, Yum Yum Vita and JP Pangilinan. The year 1995 was a year of total domination for the Blue team as they finished the 95 season with an 8 - 1 record and with the most lop sided match in Phase 6A history with the Blue team defeating the Red team which was led by Jason de Jesus and CP Romualdez by a score of 87 - 30 which was capped by a spectacular performance of JP Pangilinan who led all scorers with 31 points which would have single handedly beaten the score of the whole Red team combined. Tiki Ilagan led the season in scoring with a 30 point scoring average. The Blue team met the Gray team led by Michael Espiritu, James Fernandez and SG Go in the finals. The finals game showcased showmanships from both teams as the game went down to the wire with Tiki Ilagan icing the game for the blue team with his game winning free throws 70 - 66. Tiki Ilagan led all scorers with 31 points, Yum Yum Vita with 22 points and JP Pangilinan with 15 points for the Blue team while James Fernandez carried the load for his team with 25 points.

Choopuppies Reloaded gets 1st win!!!

After 15 straight set backs, dating back from the previous IAC basketball season, the Choopuppies Reloaded formerly known as Choopuppies from previous year, has finally broken its losing streak. The Choopuppies Reloaded team together with newly recruit Rod Coronel (IV BS ECE) has finally won its first game. With the 2004 - 2005 IAC Championship season hanging in the balance, the Pangilinan lead squad never looked back as they never trailed the ball game against Team UY, a team mostly composed of third year students. JP Pangilinan (IV BS ECE) led all scorers with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 6 steals for the Choopuppies Reloaded while Rod Coronel took care of the rebounding department with an astounding 20 rebounds to go along with 6 points, 3 steals and 3 blocks and Miko Sabado (IV BS ECE) controlled the game with his usual all around play with 3 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 block. The final tally was 35 - 28. Team UY gave Choopuppies Reloaded a scare when it came back in the 4th quarter with 6 straight unanswered points from their star player but fortunately for Choopuppies Reloaded JP Pangilinan held his nerve and came back with a heartbreaking 3 pointer which pulled the game away from Team UY. JP Pangilinan said after the game "alam kong kami yung underdog going into this game kaya binigay ko na lahat lahat at swerte namin ay nanalo kami". Playing coach and point guard Miko Sabado said "ito na ang confidence booster namin going into next season, sana magtuloy-tuloy na toh, alam ko naman na kaya namin manalo". Choopuppies Reloaded is the number 80 seed in a tournament composed of 82 teams and their opponent Team UY is one of the top 64 teams which was highly favored to win. With the win, Choopuppies Reloaded moves to the final 64 were they will face the Sophomores Champion squad.

Choopuppies Reloaded Ends its season in the Final 64...

After tasting victory, the Choopuppies Reloaded team were in cloud 9 but in the final 64, Choopuppies Reloaded fell back to earth and had to face reality once again. Up against the sophomore's division champion, the odds were once again stacked up against the Choopuppies Reloaded team. The Choopuppies Reloaded team coming from a victory against Team UY fell out of steam against the sophomore champs. Proving to be too much for the Choopuppies Reloaded, the sophomores were always ahead of the game for the entire game. Choopuppies Reloaded kept the game closed for the first 3 quarters but when it counted most, the sophomores pulled away in the last minutes of the 4th quarter. JP Pangilinan (IV BS ECE) engaged in a shoot out with the Sophomore's MVP in the 3rd quarter which was very memorable. JP Pangilinan said "i was feeling it in the 3rd quarter, i felt like i can't miss, every shot i fired seems to have found the basket everytime, but i salute the sophomore's MVP for matching up with my shots, kala ko kaya namin pero nabitin kami sa huli". The sophomore's defense in the 4th quarter proved to be too much for the Choopuppies Reloaded as they stole ball after ball in the last minutes of the 4th quarter. The sophomores used a half court press that Choopuppies had no answers to. JP Pangilinan led all scorers with 30 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists. Rod Coronel (IV BS ECE) once again took care of the boards with 16 rebounds to go along with 8 points and 5 steals while Miko Sabado had an all around game once again with 2 points, 8 assists, 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Miko Sabado said "this was another learning experience for us, babalik kami next year, and next year we will be a much stronger team". Choopuppies Management has plans to drop the Choopuppies franchise name and plans to rebuild from scratch. Choopuppies would be entering an early summer training camp and plans to add defensive specialists Roy Rollan formerly from Seniors champion Weltchmertz, Pitt Santiago from Justice League team which is a defense oriented team and Jopoy Pandaraoan from team Atomica. With these additions, the Choopuppies team will have a deeper bench, have a triple tower inside the paint and will become a more defense oriented team. "Offense wins games but defense wins championships".

philosophy paper

John Paul R. Nemesio Que

Basketball Ideals
Basketball is synonymous to the name Michael Jordan. He has been the standards of excellence in basketball. Even though he makes mistakes, these were all overshadowed by his accomplishments like MVP’s, scoring titles, championships and a lot more. Everyone who plays basketball knows his name and even after his retirement he is still well known with the name of basketball. Every good player that played in the National Basketball Association was compared to him even in other countries like China, Japan and especially our country the Philippines we have our own version of Michael Jordan in our country. He was like the “ideal” player to be if you want to make it big time in basketball. Every new player that came in the NBA and dominated the game has been regarded as the next Michael Jordan but after a while that player fails to live up to the expectation of becoming the next Michael Jordan.
In philosophy, there are ideals like ideal concretized and deontological. Plato used Socrates as a person of ideal concretized or an “ideal person”. Just like in basketball, Michael Jordan has now been the basis of an “ideal basketball player”. What makes him ideal? Well, he was known to have a flawless game in other words perfect. He was the complete package in basketball. So a concept of a basketball player has always been compared to him skill wise and talent wise. It’s like everything he said about basketball were correct. A good basketball player must always have his skills which have now become the standard of basketball “a great basketball player is someone who is like Michael Jordan the ideal player”. He is ideal because we think everything he does in basketball is right. It’s like a shuttle maker making a shuttle, before he makes another shuttle, he looks at the shuttles he made before which were molded as ideal shuttles.
Ideal deontological is the view that morality either forbids or permits actions, which is done through moral norms. Simply put, the correctness of an action lies within itself, not in the consequences of the action. An example is lying, lying is bad but it can be neutral if it produces good consequences. Another example is giving money to street children it is a good deed although it is not encouraged because some street children uses it for drugs or for some other bad things. It is also the same in basketball, we know committing fouls in basketball is like a mistake for coaches but there are situations in a game wherein you need to foul a player which equates to a good result. Being too physical in basketball tends to hurt a player which is considered bad but sometimes you need to become physical especially when getting the rebounds which will give good results for the team.
Concrete ideal is important in the moral world because it gives a guide for people to follow. It like an “ideal” law which the people will mold themselves into becoming a good Christian.
